Accents in Black and White movies

Yorick,

I think it's a fair assessment of changes over time. I suspect that the focus of power and culture has generally moved from New York and Washington to California and so too has the GA accent. I suspect also that there always have been Rhotic and non-rhotic accents as there have been in England. Maybe if London (non-rhotic) had begun to lose its significance in post-war Britain to somewere like Bristol (rhotic) everyones idea of what constitutes an English accent would be somewhat different.
