Looking at the threads on "fit", I wonder why Americans would keep the old-fashioned "gotten", but then choose to invent a new form of the past of "fit". Any ideas?
old and new
It's just based on chance. Some new verb forms have been invented by Americans (fit, dove, snuck, etc.) and other ones by Britain (got, burgled, etc.).
