AE speakers who use "did used to"...

Do you also write things such as "I didn't talked to her". If not why not?

(Hope Kef doesn't begin moaning again.)

I think they would say ''I didn't talk with her''
furrykef   Sat Aug 04, 2007 4:37 pm GMT
No, I'd never say "I didn't talked to her".

<< (Hope Kef doesn't begin moaning again.) >>

Eh, it wouldn't do any good.

You'd either say "I hadn't talked to her" or "I didn't talk to her", depending upon the time frame you had in mind.

I'm starting to wonder if Divvy is the latest incarnation of M56's multiple personality disorder.

Josh can confirm that if he wants to.

Well, this forum is overrun by prescriptivist trolls. I thought the purpose of this forum was to help people learn English to as close as a native level as possible, and not spend time handing out all sorts of prescriptivist proclamations.

I'm a human, not a troll.

Yes, "did used to" is as incorrect as "didn't talked" or "didn't knew". It should be "did use to". "use to" and "used to" also aren't actually correctly pronounced the same way. "use to" is pronounced [jus tu] with one [t] sound and "used to" is pronounced [just tu] with two [t] sounds. Pronouncing "used to" like "use to" is sloppy. For some reason, a lot of you guys appear to be [t]-haters.

You seem a bit obsessed with this prescriptive versus descriptive thing. Can you describe those two labels for us? What do you mean when you use the words prescritive and descriptive?

What do you mean when you use the words prescriptive and descriptive?

''"use to" is pronounced [jus tu] with one [t] sound and "used to" is pronounced [just tu] with two [t] sounds. ''

I never heard it pronounced with two t's.

You're probably another one of those [t]-haters, who talk about going on the "innernet", shopping "cenners" etc.
