Birds and the bees

In an episode of Armageddon film, the heroine (Liv Tyler) complains to her father (Bruce Williams) that she learnt about the birds and the bees from the tatoos of his employee. Can anybody explain what "the birds and the bees" mean there? Intimate relations between a man and a woman?

Yes, "birds and the bees" is an old euphemism for sexual relations.

It's really only used in the context of LEARNING about sex... No one would ever say "She and I had the birds and the bees" but only "I'm going to tell my children about the birds and the bees" or "my parents just told my brother about the birds and the bees" etc.

Whoops. "the moon" up above (pun intended) should be "the Moon".
