automated dialing?

here's the line i read on a book and confusese me:

she calls you back later. your company has automated dialing so she presses the star key to connect to your department.


what does "automated dialing" mean here?

some kind of system which automatically direct your call?

I hate phones and use them as little as possible, so I have to admit I'm unfamiliar with things such as this and don't know the details. But yes, it's referring to some kind of system to automatically direct your call.

I think I may can help you with this question. "automated dialing" is a function of your phone, if you call someone and his phone line is busy, and then your phone will redial automatically. Go check your phone manual, you will find out.
