A proverb according to the dictionaries that I have, is defined as "a short pithy saying, in common use, especially one with a moral". But to understand what "pithy" means you can also check that in the dictionary. The definition uses "pith" to define itself, and "pith" means essential substance. Usually a proverb tells you something very profound and meaningful. Is there a specific proverb that you are wondering about or is your question about the word "proverb"?
