"Shooting the shit"

Always wondered what this expression means.

"Me and my buddies were shooting the shit"

Drinking? Playing pool?

I have no idea what it means. Anyway, is there some forum error going on? Everytime anyone posts a comment in this thread it disappears leaving only the thread starters comment.
