A Question to "Dalit".

Hi,all:
I want to know whether the words "dalit" ,"achhut","harijan" have the same meaning? Though I know their literal meanings are not same, I'm not sure actually what the differences are,I mean, when people are talking about the social life and status of the Untouchables, which term do they use more often?
Now I'm doing research on Dalit Literature in India, but I don't know whether the Untouchables would feel abused if I use "achhut" or "mlechcha". So would anyone please tell me this in detail? Thanks a lot.

As far as I know, Harijan is the term which is supposedly non-discriminatory and introduced by Mahatma Gandhi, meaning "a child of God". Mlechka is the term given to Muslims in India. But maybe I am mistaken.
