friend of mine

Forget my previous post, as "a friend of" is actually a different sort of case of such, as the "of" there is not necessarily actually possessive in nature. Hence one can actually say "a friend of Jane". However, one would normally say, say, "a cat of Jane's", and "a cat of Jane", at least to me, sounds practically ungrammatical.
