gerund in the middle?

I yell, filling their ears, to make myself heard.

Is this ~grammatically~ correct? I'm wondering whether the placement of the second clause, with the use of the gerund, is OK.

Looks OK to me, but perhaps a tad unusual.

I think it's ok, I can't say if it's alright grammatically or not but it sounds ok to me.
