There are several meanings of the word "troll" apart from the one which most people assume to be an internet "nuisance", the one with which most of us are familiar.

1 In fishing: to troll - pulling a baited line though the water, usually
from a boat

2 To roll or cause to roll - like rolling a giant snowball down a hill

3 To walk or stroll in a casual manner - trolling through the park

4 Gay cruising - trolling around looking for a potential sexual
liaison

5 In Scandinavian folklore: supernatural beings, usually small (but
not exclusively) and excessively ugly, and usually living in caves
or in mountain retreats. Fortunately I never encountered any when
I was in Scandinavia - well, I was only in Copenhagen for a few
days and seven hours over in Sweden on a short trip across by ferry
with no chance of trolling around looking for trolls.

I believe the internet usage comes from the fishing term - fishing for suckers (fools). I actually met a troll once in Norway, on a hike in the Setesdal, pretty undeveloped region at the time. He was disguised as a kindly white-haired Norwegian gentleman in traditional garb who insisted that I take his photo with my daughter. Maybe he wasn't a troll after all...

These two seem to be very much related.
