A diplomat is a person who works for a public institution whose purpose is to communicate with other countries, promote cooperation with those countries, help people who are in a foreign country, etc. A diplomat can work in his home country (for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a similar institution) or in a foreign country (at a foreign mission: an embassy or a consulate). Diplomats who work abroad include ambassadors and consuls.
    Jill’s parents used to be diplomats, so she traveled a lot in her childhood and knows many languages.
    War was avoided, because diplomats from both countries met and talked.
