Type 7: [ My collection does not contain this type ]

For me, the last type is to guess ' pronounciation' of words.
It's so difficult for me to write these items.
There are two reasons:

- A transcription of ASCII symbols should be upgraded again. It's so difficult to write phonetic transcription into ASCII symbols.

- I heard of vowel sounds in different words, they are so different to pronounce.

- I am not sure how to pronounce vowel sounds into other words such as:

Power, Mohammed, Knock, soak, folk, goal, notes, coal, doll, pole, goat etc

as compared to given examples into transcription.

- Consonant sound!

[ I have understood completely. I heard all consonant sound of words. A speaker stressed on 'consonant word'.

I'm confused to stress symbols like [ power ]

I have to do two things, I have to stress 'p' as a consonant, 'o' as a vowel sound.

Anyway, forget it!

P.S: All pakistani people pronounce wrong 'hello' if I consider the recorded voice.
- Who recorded the voice? His voice is a native speaker voice. For me, he has very nice accent. He has much better than native speakers.

Type 9:

Q: It takes time to find a good job.
It takes time to learn web design well.
It takes too much time to download this file. I'm not going to wait any
longer.

A: It takes time

a) when you say that it takes time to do something, you mean that something takes a lot of time.

[ it teiks 'taim ]

[ the first time I used to append this type to my sm collection,I appended all interesting words from Antimoon ]

- You don't use sentence items at all. I recommend that you try them out. They're much easier to add and to repeat. They teach you how to use words in sentences (instead of teaching you dictionary definitions).

- Of course the biggest problem is the lack of phonetic transcription (you mentioned it yourself).

<<<<
Q: A common expression for a very important event.
A: History in the making.
>>>>

This item is going to give you problems because there are many words which match the question. I could say "highlight" or "historic event" and that would match the definition, even though it wouldn't be the correct answer according to this item. When your collection (and your knowledge) gets bigger, this will be a problem and it will waste your time.

If you appended this as a sentence item, for example like this:

Q: Everyone abandoned their offices in the hope of seeing history in the making.
A: history in the making = A common expression for a very important event.

you would have no problems matching the definition with the expression, because this item does not require you to do so!

<<<<
Q:
- It's Jane, and Jane ____, who can help you out of this mess.
- She ___ must decide what to do (=no one else can do it for her).
- Price ___ is not a reliable indicator of quality.

A:
Alone
[only or without any others]
- It's Jane, and Jane alone, who can help you out of this mess.
- She alone must decide what to do (=no one else can do it for her).
- Price alone is not a reliable indicator of quality.
>>>>

Why don't you make 3 items out of this?
Items should be as small as possible, because then SuperMemo can optimize them more efficiently.

<<<<
Q: Another insult that is no longer used.
A: ' Piss on your hat ' !
>>>>

Where do you get those weird idioms from?

<<<<
P.S: All pakistani people pronounce wrong 'hello' if I consider the recorded voice.
- Who recorded the voice?
>>>>

It's quite possible that all Pakistani people pronounce "hello" incorrectly.
The voice is mine.
Tom   Tuesday, April 23, 2002, 17:17 GMT
I found two language mistakes in your SuperMemo items:

<<<<
Q: ______ for a team is to cheer, or support them.
A: ' To route' !
- Who are you ' routing ' for ?
>>>>

Wrong. The word is "root".

<<<<
Q: Aein't he something ?
A: An incorrect way of saying " Isn't he special " ?
>>>>

"Ain't" (or "Isn't"), not "Aein't".
I'm not sure why this is supposed to be incorrect.

Ain't is considered slang American speech usually, and seems to be more commonly used in the southern states.

Saying ain't makes you sound less intelligent here.

To Webmaster,

Why don't you include more explanations and examples for "sentence items" as you did for other type of items (see http://antimoon.com/how/usingsm-makeitems.htm)? They will be very helpful.

Thanks for your request, Tee.
The page is somewhere on my to-do list.
