Well, it might not be Italian because I do not think some of the accents are found in Italian (Umlaut, Circumflex and Cedille).

If we want to be extremely particular, "el idioma" is an accommodation of the three-gendered system of Greek to the two-gendered system of Spanish.

I think, in order to simplify everything, instead of having every single countries language, why not simplify it down to the language which has influenced or produced almost all European Languages. Latin. Unfortunately, English has way to much power, and has killed hunderds of other languages becuase the British have assimilated everyone they can. Thanks to British power, almost all Middle Eastern countries learn English as a Second Languge, all of the Celtic languages are near death, Hindi, like most East Indian languages has more English in it than their own language, and about 98% of Aboriginal Languages within North America are officially dead.

English, like over three quarters of Europes languages, are Latin based or have 60 or 70% of Latin influence. So why not make the official language of the European Union be Latin. It looks better to have one language saying welcome on the website, rather than twenty or so languages. If Ben Yehuda was able to revive Hebrew and make not just a working language but an official language of a country, than the Europeans can do the same for Latin.
