Want

Dr. Dictionary   Monday, September 13, 2004, 11:31 GMT
How do you pronounce this word?
John   Monday, September 13, 2004, 11:35 GMT
I pronounce it the same way I pronounce ''wont''. ,

By ''wont'' I mean ''wont'' not the contraction ''won't'' which I pronounce very differently to both ''want'' and ''wont''.

Dr. Dictionary, Of course, everyone pronounces ''want'' the same way.

Everyone pronounces ''want'' the same way.

John:

<<I pronounce it the same way I pronounce ''wont''>>

Really? I used to think that "won't" is pronounced [w..unt] and "want" as[wont]
John   Monday, September 13, 2004, 12:38 GMT
Denis, I don't pronounce ''want'' and ''won't'' the same way.

But, I don't pronounce ''want'' and ''wont'' the same way.

''wont'' is a rarely used word. But ''wont'' is a word apart from ''won't''.

I do not pronounce ''want'' and ''won't'' the same way.

All, Everyone pronounces ''want'' the same way. This is just a silly question.

No one pronounces ''want'' and ''won't'' the same.

Want is pronounced [wAnt] by virtually all native English speakers around the world. Won't is pronounced [wont] and is similarly very consistent. Wont is a rarely used word and pronunciation varies someone, but it is usually closer to [wAnt] than to [wont].

What symbols are you using, Mxsmanic? In Tom's alphabet my pronunciation of "want" is /wont/ (i.e. with an open-mid back rounded vowel).

I pronounce ''want'' as [w^nt] ''wunt'' to where it rhymes with ''hunt''.

I pronounce want to rhyme with punt. I pronounce wont (meaning 'likely to' or 'tending to') to rhyme with guant. I do not pronounce punt and guant to rhyme.
Smith   Wednesday, September 15, 2004, 02:47 GMT
D, what's ''guant''? Is that a word?
Smith   Wednesday, September 15, 2004, 02:48 GMT
Jim, I think it looks like Mxsmanic is using SAMPA. In SAMPA my pronunciation of ''want'' is [wVnt].

"want" rhymes with "font" (not with "ant")
Damian   Wednesday, September 15, 2004, 13:38 GMT
There'e only one way to pronounce "want" ['wont]....I really can't think of any other way. Another example of English inconsistency.....if you think there is, and get all pious about it then it's a load of "cant" ['c@nt] I like to confuse issues, as is my wont ['wOunt].

Dont start me off on words like "dance" "grant" "trance" "chance" etc etc!.....if there are any words which are pronounced so differently within the British Isles then it's words such as those.
