Just as a follow-up:

"Do you want to come with".....I said no, but I suppose this would be okay in a very informal way, say if someone were leaving in a car and they playfully said to another friend "do you wanna come with?"

The glowing insects: "firefly" is also used, but I'd say "lightning bug" is used more often here in NJ.
Joe   Friday, December 24, 2004, 22:04 GMT
Yeah, Lightning bug is what we called it on Long Island. Must be a Northeastern thing.

Oops. pronunciation. =)

I'm wondering about the pen/pin difference from the other Californians. How do you pronounce them?
Steve   Saturday, December 25, 2004, 04:34 GMT
Canaws, ''pen'' has the ''e'' sound in ''pet'' and ''pin'' has the ''i'' sound in ''pit'' for me.
canaws   Saturday, December 25, 2004, 07:59 GMT
Thanks Steve. I realize that I do use the e/i distinction sometimes (probably in a more proper/formal setting), but my natuaral inclination is to pronounce pen the same as pin.
