The mouth is widely open when pronouncing A , just a little open when pronouncing O. To pronounce nasal A you must direct the air stream towards the nose. That supposes some additional effort which makes it closer to O. Your mouth is closing a bit to permit more air to pass towards the nose.

I think that the same phenomenon could be observed in regard to nasal O which resembles [U].

You must to make the mout like the OU to prononce somme sonds too. The tongue touche the top of mouthe for U but no the OU. To make it the nasale you close little bit more and poushe the air trou the nose. To do it you must to rond mouth to make O and open to make A. If
