Prince William's speech

A complete non-issue.

Yes, some folks say "if I were."

And others (in this case, the Prince) say "if I was."

Neither is wrong. The two co-exist, with "was" seeming to edge out the old subjunctive "were" usage in modern English English.

Next question, please!

As some same William is personable young man, what do they mean?

Is there a noun form for the word "handsome" as William has been referred by many to possess this attribute!?

Can you call it the 'Kings English' if the king can't speak it properly?

Personable: a generable description taking in a pleasant appearance alongside the essential quality of an equally pleasant personality. I reckon that pretty much sums up the bloke.

Some of the mega problems he will no doubt have to contend with from now on are constant exposure to the limelight, constant critical analysis one way or another, and the certainty of being damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Poor sod. At least his lugs don't resemble open car doors and he doesn't speak as if somebody's twisting round some part of his anatomy at the same time.

At least he went to St Andrews.......one mighty big item in his favour.

What's the 21/06/9 part supposed to mean? Is it some sort of nonstandard representation of a date? November 21, 2006?

"There have been times when I regret I selected Leeds rather than St Andrews"

Nothing to say on the actual topic (except that William is a cute guy, although a bit too young for my taste). I just had to comment on this - I made the same mistake and chose Leeds over Edinburgh... in all fairness, it was probably the best choice if we compare universities (in my specific field of studies), but when you go into comparing cities... I can't possibly regret it enough... *sigh*

That's all I had to say. Carry on. :-P
