Michiganian is actually the correct way to refer to someone from Michigan, although most not from Michigan use Michigander. I have to admit that it rolls off the tongue better to say Michigander, although it sounds kind of rustic and makes us sound like geese (gander is a word that means "male goose.")

New Jerseyan or New Jerseyite? New Jerseyans HATE the term New Jerseyite, although both are listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary
Michiganite or Michigander? I've always been told that it’s either one, but since Ryan's from that state, I'll let him be the authority.
