The word ''dog''.

Yes, hyenas are included in the canine family.

Well, I only use ''dog'' to refer to the domestic canine. I would never call a fox, a wolf, a coyote or a jackal ''a dog''. I call them canines. Dogs, foxes, wolves, coyotes, and jackals are canines not dogs to me. A dog is the domestic member of the canine family. A canine is any member of the canine family whether it is a dog, fox, wolf, coyote, jackal or dingo.
