English spoken by South Africans

That is funny. I was watching a show on the weather channel here in California about some hurricane or storm or something that sunk a Newfoundland oil rig or ship (I cannot remember which). One of the people being interviewed was a Newfie, and while he had a strong accent, it was not hard to understand.

Back to South African accents though; I have heard English South Africans speak English, but it sounds like their English has attained a gutteral Germanic sound to it. It sounds to me like these people are native Afrikaans speakers, even though their ancestors were British.
