would in the past

Can I change the sentence: "Thanks for your help - that is why I was able to finish this work"
into
"Without your help I wouldn't have been to finish this work"
The most troublesome part for me is the second one - should I write :"I wouldn't be able" instead of "I wouldn't have been able" or is it correct?

"Without your help, I would not be able to finish this." (conditional statement in the present...something that is currently going on)

Example: "John goes over and helps James everyday. Were it not for James' help, John would not be able to finish all of his work/If it weren't for James...etc. (there are various ways to word this).

"Without your help, I would not have been able to finish this." (conditional statement in the past....it has already happened)
