New York Accent

Dear Jim,

Thanks for displaying the Wikipedia Sampa list. I would like to learn the Sampa since you can't seem to use the IPA on the Internet, at least with Microsoft Windows.

The New York r symbol I was thinking about is represented by Roger Lass in his book as the velar approximant symbol mentioned on the Wikipedia list only it is barred at the bottom instead. Although it is an r , it seems to approximate the consonant l, especially the liquid l's of Irish, Polish and Yiddish. Lass describes it as "a pharyngialized palato-velar aproximant, the New York '/r/'."
