A day when your hair doesn't look very good.

You mean it is not used metaphorically?

Nope, it's pretty much literal in its overall meaning, at least in most usages.

Re: "Bad hair day"... This is an expression that I kind of like and find useful sometimes just like "Give me a break!" yet, I've gotten into trouble before for using it, and I saw a kid get scolded by his parents once for saying "Give me a break!" to them. So you have to be careful how you use language sometimes. With your friends you can speak one way, with parents, the people at work, and enemies? you have to speak another way.

I don't think that's correct. "Bad hair day" has transcended its literal meaning and now applies to any day when nothing seems to be going right. I just seem to recall several scenarios at the workplace where co-workers (usually female) would use this expression (back when it was popular) any time they were in a foul or distressed mood. |
