Curse Words in the UK

I've heard many times (anecdotally) that in the UK it's more acceptable in a proffesional or social environment to use words like "cunt" and "fuck". In the US, the former is very much forbidden in mixed gender company and certainly in professional situations. In some parts of the US it's used for men and women. I think in the UK you can use it an a slur against either gender. The latter is allowed amongst friends and co-workers with whom you have already developed a strong rapport but generally not used when speaking to people you don't know well or with your girlfriend's parents. (Mrs. Johnson, can you pas the fuckin' potatos?")

How does this work in the UK for those two words?
