Australian and New Zealand Accents

How exactly did these two countries develop their accents? Their people originally came from the UK right? Is it like how the pilgrims in the 13 Colonies developed their own?

NZ accents had more East England and Scottish influence.
AU accents are basically low class accents from Southern England, mostly Cockney.

NZ accents sound more classy to my ear, AU's accents sound like Texans putting on a Cockney accent.
