the Ryukyuan language which is spoken in Okinawa is different from Japanese. Both Japanese and Ryukyuan are separate language .
Can u guys tell me what difference they are?
Is it possible that Okinawa adopts Ryukyuan as official language?
First of all it would be easier to reply if you knew which Ryukyuan dialect you're referring to since the ryukyuan dialects are divided into 2 groups:Amami/Okinawa dialects and sento(Front islands) dialects, which refer to Miyako , Yaeyama and Yonaguni dialects. Apart from that the Japanese dialects are divided into mainland Japan and ryukyu dialect. Well, that's what linguists say because I studied the dialect spoken in Naha and in mainland Okinawa but it has nothing to do with standard Japanese with exception of words that seem to be a borrowing from Japanese when Okinawa was invaded by the clan of Satsuma (Kagoshima) in the 17th century.
Examples of ryukyuan (Sorry if it is rusted but I haven't used it for 13 years).
RYUKYUAN:Wannee _______yaibiin
Japanese: watashi wa _______desu
I am____
Ryukyuan: kuma nkai chaabitan?
Japanese: doko kara kimashita ka?
Where are you from?
I will take a look at my textbook and will give you some more examples.
