How about "A couple of old friends I first met in Atlanta and I decided to go out for a beer last night"? That sucks so much that it doesn't even seem possible to say that naturally in "standard English" or whatever you want to call it.
Me and a couple of friends I first met in Atlanta decided to go out... is what everyone would say, I think.

Sounds fine conversationally.

"A couple of old friends / I first met in Atlanta/ and I / decided to go out for a beer last night"

Think "online processing".
