English Orthography

Does anyone find this aspect of English particularly frustrating? It seems that there are little set rules about how to spell things and that words are often spelled primarily based on language origin.

You are not alone - generations of learners and users have had these difficulties. English is, in many ways, a simplified language but when it comes to the written form - its orthography - it is immensely rule-disorderly and results, in part, in high levels of illiteracy. See <spellingsociety. org> for an analysis of the problems of the spelling system and the social, educational and psychological consequences.
