What is the vowel used for "do" or "you" in Australian English?
Trawicks   Wed Sep 02, 2009 3:38 pm GMT
It's typically [ʉ:].

Many British people who have just arrived in Australia are very bemused by the fact that so many Australian's keep on reciting the name of some female called "Emma Chissitt" while they are buying goods in the stores.

Thanks, Trawicks. Are there any other variations?

In New South Wales, according to a study from 2003, this sound is closer to [ʏ:]. Also, like most other English dialects, the accent exhibits 'l-coloring,' so that 'fool' is often pronounced [fʊ:ɫ].

There are probably some other allophones as well, but I'm not well-versed enough in the dialect to say what those are.

"Emma Chissitt" : How much is it?

I saw Barry Humphreys on the box this evening. They put photo's of Dame Edna Everage and Barbara Cartland side by side. Spot the person with make up!

It takes a little while to load so perhaps it is not worth it.

Interesting Trawicks, I'm no linguist but I notice the 'oo' 'ou' sound in NSW is less dipththongal. It's strongest in WA and SA imo. Notice how some people say 'pewel' for pool.

"Many British people who have just arrived in Australia are very bemused by the fact that so many Australian's..."

Many Australians are bemused by the fact that so many British people can't write their own language properly. "Australian's? Yeah, that's very British!

Damian should know better and probably does.

3. Apostrophes are NEVER ever used to denote plurals! Common examples of such abuse (all seen in real life!) are:

Banana's for sale which of course should read Bananas for sale

Menu's printed to order which should read Menus printed to order

MOT's at this garage which should read MOTs at this garage

1000's of bargains here! which should read 1000s of bargains here!

New CD's just in! which should read New CDs just in!

Buy your Xmas tree's here! which should read Buy your Xmas trees here!
