To walk

I woke up this morning thinking of the curious English Word "to walk".

I was very interested to learn more about this Word, so when I got to my Creative Writing Class, I asked the teacher about it.

I was disappointed with his reply though because he said it was a silly question and suggested I look in a dictionary.

I think he was similar to some people who respond to my posts in non-constructive ways on this site.

But I am the kind of Person who doesn't give into demotivators and they only make me try harder to Contribute. I believe I can Contribute to this site, and I hope people will read my posts and respond, especially Damian From Edinburgh and Uriel.

I still hope to get a reply from Uriel about Irish sexuality.

But back to "walk". After the teacher shuned me I decided to do some research. I enjoy researching.

I found this at Wikipedia:
Walking (also called ambulation) is the main form of animal locomotion on land, distinguished from running and crawling.[1][2] When carried out in shallow waters, it is usually described as wading and when performed over a steeply rising object or an obstacle it becomes scrambling or climbing. The word walk is descended from the Old English wealcan "to roll".

A definition:
walk, walking
the act of traveling by foot; "walking is a healthy form of exercise"

I thought that was interesting. I hope this thread will generate a lot of Discussion.

It is interesting that "walk" rhymes with "talk" which is a word I heard used last night and seemed fascinating at the time. I met with some friends from Poland, the same ones who I gave a gift consisting of Tea that wasn't appreciated.

But the word "talk" is very curious. Apparently , it is used in Ireland also.

My Polish friends and I "talked". I thought that was interesting.

There was only one spelling mistake that I spotted, 'shuned'. Should be 'shunned' of course.

When I was at school I was very annoyed when the English teachers only focussed on my spelling mistakes and not one what I was trying to say.

I hope you appreciate that spelling and grammar are important and much as I would like to award you full marks, I do have to make a one mark deduction.

"Walk don't walk
Talk don't talk"
Hey Billy take a walk...with me.

Boomtown Rats "Rat Trap"

In the United States, the pedestrian crossings have a sign that says 'Walk' or 'Dont Walk'. In the UK, symbols are used instead; a green man walking or a red man standing.

Bob Geldoff in the song is singing about Ireland and what it is like to live in a society with to many rules.

In this town Billy says "everybody tries to tell you what to do"
In this town Billy says "everybody says you gotta follow rules."
You walk up to those traffic lights,
Switch from your left to right
You push in that button, and when that button comes alight
It tells you
"Walk don't walk
Talk don't talk"
Hey Billy take a walk...with me.

The young people of course, break the rules.

And young Billy watched it all under the yellow street light
And said "tonight of all nights there's gonna be a fight"

Boomtown Rats

Rat Trap lyrics

There was a... lot of rocking going on that night,
Cruising time for the young bright lights,
Just down past the gasworks, by the meat factory door,
The five lamp boys were coming on strong.
The Saturday night city beat had already started
The pulse of the corner boys sprang into action
And young Billy watched it all under the yellow street light
And said "tonight of all nights there's gonna be a fight"

Billy don't like it living here in this town
He says the traps have been sprung long before he was born
He says "hope bites the dust behind all the closed doors"
And pus and grime ooze from it's scab crusted sores.
There's screaming and crying in the high rise blocks"
It's a rat trap Billy but you're already caught
But you can make it if you want to or you need it bad enough
You're young and good looking and you're acting kind of tough
Anyway it's Saturday night time to see what's going down.
Put on the bright suit Billy, head for the right side of town
It's only 8 o'clock but you're already bored
You don't know what it is but there's got to be more
You'd better find a way out, hey kick down the door
It's a rat trap and you've been caught

In this town Billy says "everybody tries to tell you what to do"
In this town Billy says "everybody says you gotta follow rules."
You walk up to those traffic lights,
Switch from your left to right
You push in that button, and when that button comes alight
It tells you
"Walk don't walk
Talk don't talk"
Hey Billy take a walk...with me.
Little Judy's trying to watch "top of the pops"
But mum and dad are fighting don't they ever stop,
She take down her coat and walks out on the street,
It's cold on that road, but it's got that home beat,
Deep down in her pockets she finds 50p.,
Now is that any way for a young girl to be,
"I'm gonna get out of school work in some factory,
Work all the hours God gave me get myself a little easy money"
Now, now, now na na.

Her mind's made up, she walks down the road,
Her hands in her pockets, coat buttoned 'gainst the cold,
She finds Billy down at the Italion cafe
And when he's drunk it's hard to understand what Billy says
But then he mumbles in his coffee and suddenly roars,
"It's a rat trap Judy; and we've been caught...."

Chinaman, Laundryman
Language: English

"Chinaman"!
"Laundryman"!
Don't call me "man"!
I am worse than a slave.

Wash! Wash!
Why can I wash away
The dirt of others' clothes
But not the hatred of my heart?
My skin is yellow,
Does my yelow skin color the clothes?
Why do you pay me less
For the same work?
Clever boss!
You know
How to scatter the seeds of hatred
Among your ignorant slaves.

Iron! Iron!
Why can I smooth away
The wrinkle
Of others' dresses
But not the miseries of my heart?
Why should I come to Arnerica
To wash clothes?
Do you think "Chinamen" in China
Wear no dresses?

I came to America
Three days after my marriage.
When can I see her again?
Only the almighty "Dollar" knows!

Dry! Dry!
Why do clothes dry,
But not my tears?
I work
Twelve hours a day,
He pays
Fifteen dollars a week.
My boss says,
"Chinaman,
Go back to China,
If you don't feel satisfied!
There,
Unlimited hours of toil:
Two silver dollars a week,
If
You can find a job."
Thank you, Boss,
For you remind me.
I know
Bosses are robbers everywhere!
Chinese boss says:
"You Chinaman,
Me Chinaman,
Come work for me --
Work for your fellow countryman!
By the way,
You 'Wong', me 'Wong' --
Do we not belong to same family?
Ha! ha!
We are cousins!
O yes!
You 'Hai Shan', me 'Hai Shan',
Do we not come from same district?
O come work for me;
I will treat you better!"
GET away from here!
What is the difference,
When you comea to exploit me?

"Chinaman"!
"Laundryman"!
Don't call me "Chinaman"!
Yes, I am a "Laundryman"!
The workingman!
Don't call me "Chinaman"!
I am the Worldman!
["The International Soviet
Shall be his human race!"]1

"Chinaman"!
"Laundryman"!
All you workingmen!
Here is the brush
Made of [study]2
Here is the soap
Made of [action]3.
Let us all
wash with the [brush]4!
Let us all
Press with the iron!
Wash!
Brush!
Dry!
Iron!
Then we shall have
A clean world!

I was very interested to learn

Is this sentence correct? I would say I was very interested in learning ...
Caspian   Fri Oct 23, 2009 12:41 pm GMT
I would use 'in learning' here. But 'to learn' is still correct if you write the rest of the sentence correctly, I think. Even as a native speaker, it's difficult to judge properly.

Robin Michael, understand these two things:

1. To look things up on Wikipedia is not research

2. To post extracts from other websites and links to Youtube is not a Contribution
