What you mentioned about Asia is partly correct Pete.

In Asia where they were either non colonised or colonised by another European power other from the British are usually the ones adopting the American system.

LOL well the roots of our accent does have it roots (which is much closer to Cockney) from the UK and we Kiwis used to be nicknamed 'South Sea Poms'.
