american formula?

I need the help of native Americans. I'm translating a text from American English and there is a strange structure in the original. I simply can't figure out whether it's correct or not: "My friend, John, discovered this secret one day. A friend, John woke up one morning and said to"... It sounds weird. Why does he repeat once again friend John and why is there an indefinite article???

Can you help me? Have you ever heard a structure like this?

It sounds like a mistake. If it is not a mistake, it implies that there are two Johns, one a friend of the writer, and another a friend of the first John and sharing the same name.
