Being British, I can imagine "toms" being a dirty word in this situtation.

Toms or Tommies were a term the Germans used to called the British during the war years.
It's like something from a Carry On movie, where a woman has two tom cats, and the guy says to her, "That's a lovely pair of toms you've got there. Can I stroke them?"
