It's still not the same as a British "new" though (I'm not implying you said anything like this, I just want to point it out) since the Californian "new" has the fronted part of the diphthong as nucleus.

British: [nj}:] -> [}:] is the nucleus
Californian: [n1w] -> [1] is the nucleus
