French authors for intermediate students

I am at an intermediate level in my French reading ability. Most simplified texts and children's books are too easy or boring, but many French authors have a style that is a little difficult for me. (Harry Potter in translation is about my level, but I'd prefer original works in French.) I'd appreciate any recommendations on Francophone authors (including Quebecois) that use a straightforward style (like Pearl Buck for English) that would be not too difficult to read and yet interesting.
