URiel said<<<Greek civilization was really spawned by contact with Egypt's civilization; ancient Greek statuary shows that correllation perfectly. And let's not forget the Phoenicians, from whose alphabet the Latin one was originally derived.... <<<<
permit me to disagree strongly, first latin laphabet derived from etruscan one, derived from greek thaqt derived it from phoenician one, secondly greek culture has really nothing to do with egyptian one, statuary is completely different, take a look at classical doriphoros by a grat greek artist and egyptian satuary, the real contct between eastern civlitation and greek\western one was during the hellenic period, and eastern culture was inglobed by greek one.

Brennus : « The Anglo-Saxons are probably more famous in history for their legal code than their level of civilized living. Much of English common law is based on old Anglo-Saxon law including the principle that a man is innocent until proven guilty. »

Bien sûr, la « commune ley » ou « droit franco-normand » n'a rien à voir avec le système juridique médiéval alors en vigueur en France septentrionale.

De la même manière, l'esquisse de la Grande charte (Magna carta) n'a pas été rédigée en ancien français sur le sol du royaume de France avant d'être officialisée en médiolatin pour diffusion à l'intention des Outremanchais...

Does any one knows what is the meaning of of the Portuguese phrase 'quem me dera' (who would give me) and how it is translated in other languages?

“Quem Me Dera” or “Quem Dera” are expressions of hope or desire for something to happen.

You can also say:
“Tomara”;

“Oxalá” and “Queira Deus” (these have a religious meaning “If it is God desire”).

In Brazil, “Oxalá” has a different meaning it is a religious Deity.

"Oxala" is equivolent to "Ojala" in Spanish which I believe is Arabic in origin.
