is English made up?

is the English language made up? it sounds so made up because of the many words of different origins. English has got both French, Latin and German words. Where are the "English words"? Is English only a mixed language?

what do u mean, "made up"? It's made up by the people who thought and communicated in it before, and this process hasn't finished as long as people yet doing this.
"Is English only a mixed language?" - any language adopt and naturalize words, if English is doing this easier, it just because it's very responsive and this is an advantage, not a disadvantage

I see what Hitchhiker is trying to get at. Basicly when you throw a load of different cultures and languages together, our beutifull language is what comes about.

yes, English is made-up. It's a world language. It is only around 500 years old.

Recipe for making THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Preheat over to 400C

Start of with a mixture of Celtic tongues then add smatterings of Latin. Mix thoroughly.

Then chuck in a whole dollop of Germanic Anglo Saxon, made up of Angle, Viking and Dane, then stir thoroughly and continuously until the mixture begins to resemble Old English.

Gradually mix in a little Norman French, remembering to stir the whole time and then you should see Middle English begin to form in the pot.

With continuous mixing and stirring over a lenghthy period of time you then gradually add pinches of tongues from the Continent, Middle East, Far East and even further afield, all imported into the country by British Empire Expansion and Delivery Services Limited. All the while please remember to stir and mix in thoroughly.

Finally, add bits and pieces of Americana, again making sure it's completely incorporated into the whole morass there in the pot.

Then cover the whole lot with a single layer of greaseproof paper, followed by a layer of foil, tie down thoroughly and slam it into the oven to cook slowly for an indefinite time. Unfortunately you will have to undo the coverings when necessary to add more ingredients as they come onto the market as the whole cooking business is an ongoing process.

The result is the ENGLISH LANGUAGE...never fully cooked as it will always be changing ad infinitum.
