Is anything real grammatically wrong with this sentence?

Sitting on the wall, my mother saw four birds singing..
Michelle   Sun Apr 23, 2006 5:15 pm GMT
If the meaning of the sentence is that my mother was sitting on the wall, then the sentence should read:
"While sitting on the wall, my mother saw four birds singing."

If the meaning of the sentence is that the birds were on the wall, then the sentence should read:
"My mother saw four birds sitting on the wall."
The sentence is questionable as to meaning.

Is it wrong to say:She has eaten rice?

I would disagree with Michelle. I think the sentence:

<<Sitting on the wall, my mother saw four birds singing.>>

is fine. However, if you are just learning English, you should be aware that it is a slightly unusual sentence. The sentence that Michelle suggests is more conventional.

"While sitting on the wall, my mother saw four birds singing."

Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay Lyrics
Artist: Otis Redding
Album: Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay

(SITTIN' ON) THE DOCK OF THE BAY
- written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper
- lyrics as recorded by Otis Redding December 7, 1967, just three
days before his death in a plane crash outside Madison, Wisconsin
- #1 for 4 weeks in 1968

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

The sentence is fine IF it was mother who was sitting on the wall. If the birds were the ones sitting on the wall, then you should reconfigure the sentence so that it is less ambiguous.
