Mike,

From my experience, Spanish is less difficult to reach an intermediate level, especially in understanding, than other languages, at least for an English speaker. You can probably reach a reading level about as quickly with French, but the pronunciation of Spanish is much easier to understand, and it is much easier to pronounce understandably.

As others have noted, mastering the language is still going to be difficult, but you may be suprised how quickly you can reach the level of understanding a TV news broadcast, or reading nonfiction. Understanding a conversation between two Puerto Ricans on the street, or reading Borges, may take you a lot longer.

By the way, there's a terrific course called Destinos for learning Spanish. It's played on a lot of public TV stations in the States, but you can watch all 52 episodes--for free--on the Annenberg/CPB website:

They also have similar excellent courses for French and German (and English), for those who are interested.

Advanced speakers: When you were learning Spanish, what was the most difficult thing to learn? I mean gramatically.

I don't think Spanish is all that easier than French in terms of reading and comprehension. However, the pronunciation of French is pretty beastly, which is definitely a huge blockage for some. I'm guessing Italian may be easier than both, but is obviously much less ubiquitous than either of the other two.

The fact that there's only one phoneme in Spanish that doesn't exist in American English immediately gives it a leg up on the competition, so to speak. But I think pronunciation is ultimately a bit misleading, since it mostly pertains to only the early stages of language learning. I know a number of non-native Mandarin speakers who say that once you get past the hellish pronunciation, the grammar and structure of the language is actually refreshingly simple. On the other hand, Finnish is an utterly simple language to pronounce, but is so mind-bogglingly difficult to learn (there's something like 15 noun cases), that it could induce suicide.
