Etymology of Portuguese word "ainda"
The Portuguese for yet/still/even is "ainda"
this seems to be a different derivation from its equivalent in French, Catalan or Spanish:
encore, encara, todavia
Interestingly it is very similiar to the Albanian - "ende" - which has more or less the same meaning - Can anyone explain its origin? Could it be Celtic or Pre-Indo European?
In my oppinion it is coming from Greek <endon = inside, in there>. But, I can not tell 100% sure.
I think it is one of those words that no one really knows the origin for sure.
Another hypothesis is from Latin: ad + inde.
Portuguese also has the word "todavia" but with the meaning "sin embargo" in Spanish.
Aurélio says:
AINDA = [De a- + inda.]
INDA is a rare form of AINDA
««INDA is a rare form of AINDA »»
Not rare it is used in Portugal, mainly spoken.
Ad'inda, onde o "d" caíu e deu origem a Aínda.
Aduc (Latin)
Aún/todavía (Spanish)
Ancora (Italian)
««INDA is a rare form of AINDA »»
Not rare it is used in Portugal, mainly spoken.
We don't care about Portugal.
Seu abilolado!
Basque: orain / oraindik
Both the Greek and Latin hypotheses seem a bit weak - why is there no equivalent in Italian and French if the root is Greek or Latin?
I suspect it may have a less obvious etymology..
Estoy de acuerdo con Aldvm:
La Real Academia de la Lengua Española dice que la etimología de aún es: Del lat. adhuc.
Pt ainda probablemente proviene de la misma etimología que Es aún.
Por cierto, escrito sin acento, "aun" tiene otro significado. Ejemplos:
- Te daré 100 duros, y aun ('hasta') 200, si los necesitas.
- No tengo yo tanto, ni aun ('ni siquiera') la mitad.
Por cierto, añado Fr encore a la lista.
Well, Brazilian Houaiss Dictionary gives us this on AINDA origin:
''
a- + inda, f.arc., de orig. até hoje não explicada satisfatoriamente; f.hist. sXIII ainda, sXIII ajnda, sXIII aynda''
Its origin has not been explained in a satisfactory way.
