importance of the ancient languages

<< Pauline,
With respect to the language classes offered at your school, would you say that they are pretty extensive >>

I think they're not bad. The English lessons are not so good that the ducth, because the teacher is not a native-speaker, and i think it's difficult to find a very good teacher. I like the flexibility ; if you want learn many languages, it's possible, although you must choose this direction and therefore neglect other subjects. Also, it's possible change without consequence.

But, I think here it's not good that it's exepected your parents will help you for exemple to make your homework. I never would want it - if i must wriet something, I write it. Often, you can learn things more interstig from the internet or books that from your teachers, but mostly the teachers can give you some directives and this is nice, also many of them are kind. What you think about your teachers ?

<<What you think about your teachers ? >>

They're okay. To be honest, I only go to school to learn mathematics and some science. The rest of the classes I could teach myself. In U.S. government, or any history course, I generally know more than my teachers do. I read on average about two hours per day, usually about political science or history.

Unfortunately, a lot of schools here don't let you challenge courses. In Las Vegas, I challenged two years of history and U.S. government, along with 11th grade English, and I passed them with straight A's. When I moved back to California this year, they wouldn't accept those credits.

<< Yes that's true. I did see someone I know. I wasn't aware of it. Can we meet again at the thread 'that stupid belgian'? >>

Hi Jo,

Jo   Sat Sep 30, 2006 10:47 pm GMT
Yes, here and there the same nice people are lording it.
Nacktmull and the incontinent owls are well buried.
There is an sudden cowardly absence of S..R, probably busy getting it all wiped out.

I hate spam
Pauline   Sat Sep 30, 2006 11:00 pm GMT
Yes, I've noticed that S...R not visit the last days. Those stories are disappeared but i hope that we can have a german thread again.

It's allowed he write : ''ducthophobic walloon girl'' and he hate you, the ''bloody belgian'' but it's not allowed we write nothign !!!who is S...R is he a teacher at a school ?

but, this thread about the ancient languages and those ones we're learning at school is a very interetsing thread. What languages you leanr at school (or have learned if you're older) ? I suppose : english, german, french ?
Pauline   Sat Sep 30, 2006 11:06 pm GMT

Yes, very intrigueing this wiping out of our threads after bully S..R came around.

At the time I took one year Latin and Greek in school (Forgot all about it) and German, English and French. I am fine in Portuguese and Spanish too.

I hate spam ( pavlov reaction to antimoon)
I also hate non-justified wiping out of threads.
Pauline   Sat Sep 30, 2006 11:18 pm GMT
then you can speak many languages, for sure more than S...R

I 've forgot latin before i'v learned it Haha!!! I didn't managed to concentrate for learn it. Where you have learned spanish and portuguese - I think dutch schools are teaching only english, germn and french, no ?

Jammer genoeg moet ik echt naar bed. mijn ouders kunnen wel heel iriitant zijn. wij spreken verder morgen dus, of maandag. tot dan:-)

I hate s.....

Answer to more questions about Old Norse:
Before 600-700 Proto-Norse (urnordisk) was spoken in Scandinavia. It was a language with very long words, only known from runic inscriptions, like this:
ek hlewagastiz holtijaz horna tawido
= I Hlewagastis of holt made the horn.

During the dark ages of the syncope period 600-700 Proto-Norse changed into Old Norse. The words got shorter and new vowels developed through umlauts. At the time when Vikings first appear in history (the Anglo-Saxon chronicle has an entry for 793, telling how pagan savages from the sea sacked and burnt God's church on Lindisfarne in Northumbria, England) Old Norse had already developed as the language of Norway and was quickly spreading to Iceland, the Faroese Islands, Shetland, the Orkneys, the Hebrides, Ireland, Isle of Man, Yorkshire and other places where the Vikings settled.
The language spoken in Sweden and Denmark was almost the same as Old Norse, but there were some differences, so it is usually called Old East Norse.

At least in the literary form Old Norse remained relatively stable untill 1350, when the Black Death hit Norway and the loss of literacy together with Low German, Danish and Swedish influence started the process that led to modern Norwegian.

In it's literary form modern Icelandic is very close to Old Norse. But the pronounciation has changed a bit and of course the Icelanders have adopted and constructed a lot of new words. But Icelandic school children still read the 1000 year old sagas without problems.

And when did the Vikings start saying the Lord's Prayer? Roughly speaking Scandinavia was Christian by year 1000. Some coastal regions with lots of contact with the Continent earlier, some backward forest regions later, but ca. year 1000.

BTW there is a charming saga anecdote about how Odin was seen in Scandinavia for the last time, in 1208:

Late one night a smith in Eastern Norway gets a visit from a one-eyed rider with a broad-brimmed hat and a blue coat, who asks a smith to shoe his horse. The suspicious smith asks where the stranger stayed during the previous night. The stranger mentions places so far distant that the smith does not believe him. The stranger says that he has stayed for a long time in the North and taken part in many battles, but now he is going to Sweden. When the horse is shod, the rider mounts his horse and says "I am Odin" to the stunned smith, and rides away.

The next day, the battle of Lena took place in Sweden, where one of the parties claimed that Odin led them into battle, the last time Odin made an appearance as the pagan god of war. But in the following centuries people still said that he was around, now as the leader of Åsgårdsreia / die wilde Jagd / the Wild Hunt, the nocturnal group of mythological creatures that haunted the woods of Northern Europe.

Hello fredrik,

Those were very interesting messages !!!:-)

I'm wondering also abotu the 2 modern norwegian languages, and if they did developp from the same source. After I've read your 1st message, it can seem that the Low german, danish and Swedish influence of the langauegs woudl have been different ?

Also, what are the similarities and differnces between them ? Have they spearate tv ?

Jo,

what you think about ducth tv has subtitles for flemich programmes ? I think it's ridiculous !!! With this, they decourage respect for non-standard dutch dialects i think.

The ancient languages are important for the etymology, I believe.
