"free money" doesn't exist. I also believe so. Because "gratis" has the meaning of "wothout money", and not just "free".

Maybe the understanding of "gratis" is quite difficult... just like british jokes...;P

Bear in mind that "gratis" can be used as either an adjective or an adverd in English:
- Tickets must be preordered. Lunch is gratis. [free]
- He offered to fix the car gratis. [for free; free of charge]


Thus, in French:
Gratis (the English adjective) = Gratuit
Gratis (the English adverb) = Gratuitement
