A question about Sequence of Tenses

Hello everybody.

I have the following question.

Mother says to her son: "Don't go deep into the forest alone because it is dangerous."

How will it look in reported speech?

1. Mother said to her son not to go deep into the forest alone because it was dangerous.
2. Mother said to her son not to go deep into the forest alone because it is dangerous.

I mean the case when the forest still exists and it is still dangerous to go there. According to Sequence of Tenses I should put both the clauses into Past Simple, but does it apply to the case when the warning is still actual?

It depends what the journalist wants to infer. "...because it was dangerous" relates to the time when the mother made the comment and so conveys the condition of the forest at that juncture. But if the journalist reports "because it is dangerous" it's because the forest is generally always known to be dangerous.
