Norah Jones accent

I just saw an interview w/Norah Jones
and her accent seemed so Californian.
she pronounced thought as /thAt/,so different than NYC where she is from.
Why is that many people from NYC aspire to a Western (mostly Californian) accent? Because CC merger is in?
