>>Them damn French, not supporting our war effort (against Iraq)! We're going to pass a bill to force the Congress cafeteria to rename "French fries" to "freedom fries." That'll show 'em!<<

It's the same thing as french fries. As Americans, we're aware that a lot of the rest of the world doesn't like us, but when the French refused to back us up in Iraq we got pretty irritated and a handful of businesses and restaurants were calling french fries and french toast freedom fries and freedom toast.

I don't know of anyone that actually called them that, I think it was just the cafeteria at Congress in Washington, D.C.

They quietly returned the conventional name last July, it seems. I read last year in Wikipedia.

Is "rename to" correct use?

<As Americans, we're aware that a lot of the rest of the world doesn't like us, >

Really? Why is that? Why don't a lot of this world like you?

I see. What caused that return?

I see there is a song with that name, but IE doesn't open the page for some reason. Is the song banned?

No, you can find it on Robert Plant's homepage.

FREEDOM FRIES

The father, son and the three wise men
Operating undercover out in Bethlehem
Will they heal the sick? Can they raise the dead?
Can they bring it on home like the good book says?

Billy the Kid told the Prince of Thieves
A little give and take to satisfy my needs
You can give me lots but I'll take some more
I got my eyes on your treasure beneath the desert floor?

Freedom fries and burns and scars
The liberator goes too far
Freedom fries and screams and yells
The promised land is promised hell

Guest,

<< Is "rename to" correct use?>>

Don't know. I mainly added that "to" to prevent too groups of double-quotes from being right next to each other. It doesn't sound wrong.
beneficii   Thu Jul 26, 2007 1:48 pm GMT
Bah, I meant "two groups of double-quotes..."
Pos   Thu Jul 26, 2007 2:24 pm GMT
"Rename" without "to" is correct.
beneficii   Thu Jul 26, 2007 5:08 pm GMT
Pos,

OK, whatever. You'd probably be able to get away with both.

<You'd probably be able to get away with both. >

You wouldn't need to get away with the correct one.

The correct ones are "rename", alone" or "rename as". Their simply is no other choice.
