Can you tell me what is the correct way to refer to these years? Is it "nineteen one" etc. or is it "nineteen oh one" etc.

I pretty much only ever hear "nineteen oh one". However, some decades ago it might have been more common to say "nineteen aught one"... the years were usually abbreviated "aught one, aught two", etc., much as we say "oh one", "oh two" for the 2000s. Nowadays we usually just say "nineteen oh one, nineteen oh two", forgoing the abbreviation.
