girl - gro?
There are speakers of an American dialect that say something like that. It is not standard American English, and therefore most people would say incorrect.

That's a stupid way of looking at it." Which part is stupid, that most speakers of standard English would consider the pronunciation incorrect, or that I pointed it out?

That's a stupid way of looking at it. I think you've done your transcription wrong. You can read about X-SAMPA here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-SAMPA What you maybe be referring to is l-vocalisation, where /l/ is realized as a vocoid in certain positions. I have this in my dialect of English, and I say 'girl' [g3`:o] or [g3`.U]<< In the dialect of English here, it similarly ["gR=:M:], for the record. |
