Last vs latest

Hi All,

In some situations, I get confused with the usage of the word last vs latest.
E.g.: What is more appropriate "Thank you for your last email" or "Thank you for your latest email". It seems to me that "last email" gives the impression that this is going to be the last email ever received from the sender!

Any thoughts?

In this particular case, I think "last" is pretty much equlvalent to "latest".

"Thank you for your last email" sounds to me like it can be understood both as 'Thanks for the last email you're going to send me (as you state above)' or 'Thanks for the last email you sent me'--what I would normally hear it to mean.

"Thank you for your latest email" sounds to me like it's the newest version of your 'email', like the "latest and greatest" [kind] of email.
I wouldn't use latest here.

Last would be understood for the way you mean it.

You could also use "most recent"
'Thank you for your most recent email'
would that work for you?

I wouldn't use "latest" either. It sounds as if the person writes too many of them to you.

Yeah, I think that "most recent" is appropriate in this situation as the person writes, indeed, too many of them to me...

Cheers,
