We dont need to invade the R.O.I. We've secured supplies of Guiness and Whiskey.

Where do you make these things up?

"Athletes from Northern Ireland are given the choice of competing either for Great Britain or for the Republic of Ireland. "
not true ni is part of uk and therefore automatically u r british, u would need an irish passport to represent reland but they arent hard to get , they practically give them away

"The British Government are duty bound to accede to the wishes of the people of Northern Ireland, and what they decide will be respected. The thing is this - they wish to remain part of the UK by a ratio of about 4:1 according to the last UK General Election in 2005. The next will have to take place before June 2010 at the very latest under current rules. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe the situation will change."
WHAT ? we vote for own own parties , who r represented at westminster, but even if we all agreed it wudnt matter cos 1.5 million v 58 million london always wins! 4:1 its more like 1.5:1

"""Why doesn't UK invade the fucking republic of Ireland? "

They already did""
i must have missed the news that day?! :-)

why wud we want or need to invade? we gave them their independance - ni has been part of uk for over 400 years!!

"However, there are certain groups and organisations who do not fully acknowledge NI to be British. Just look at most British insurance documents (the small print, of course) and you will, in the majority of cases, see that Northern Ireland is precluded from cover, for the reson that British Insurance companies tend not to perceive NI as being British."

thats cos car insurance is alot dearer here due to car crime and road deaths same as jersey, most of them r quite happy to take our money its the same as yours, only they get paid for taking it

The united kingdom refers to the territories that are under the queen . That would include Australia and Canada asswell as England ,Scottland, cornwall and Wales and small islands like the falklands and ascension. But not northern ireland and some smaller islands like Man and Guersey.Brittisch refers to the people who live in the british area . Which includes ireland , england ,scottland, wales ,cornwall, french bretagne and the brittish isles (man , guersey).but not canada or australia. Great britain is brittain without french bretagne and the irish republic.

The full name of the UK is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so of course it includes Northern Ireland.

UK means: The united Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Uriel   Sat Sep 06, 2008 7:27 pm GMT
Australia and Canada are not included in the United Kingdom. They are instead part of the British Commonwealth.

Oh, she must have put on weight since I last saw her on the telly.

The British government doesn't even respect the UK's territorial integrity letting a huge chunk of Ireland break away in 1922. No other state would act so cowardly, it's pathetic!

"This is very much in line with the official use of GB with regard to the European identification letters for this country....just as F is used for France singly, D for Germany, NL - the Netherlands, E for Spain (Espana), P (Portugal) PL (Poland) N (Norway) I (Italy) CH (Switzerland - referring to the old Helvetia) and SF (for Finland - Suomi Finland) and so on and so on for all the rest of the countries of Europe. "
**********************

That doesn't mean the team should be called Team GB. It should be called Great Britain.

After all, they don't call it Team PL. They call it Poland.

They don't call it Team I. They call it Italy.

It just seem, especially in Left Wing media such as the BBC and The Guardian, that it is "trendy" to refer to the team as "Team GB".

It's just daft. It should be called Great Britain.

GB Great Britain - but the UK is used far more often. Confusing? Of course it is - very little in GB/UK is straightforward! That's one of the reasons we are percieved (sorry, perceived) as Perfidious Albion by the rest of Europe! (Albion is an archaic name for Britain, more particularly England).
**********************************

It's not that confusing. Great Britain is the island which is occupied by England, Scoland and Wales.

Northern Ireland occupies the island of Ireland.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland are united together to form the UK - its full name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But usually when people refer to "Britain" it is, of course, the whole of the UK they are referring.

It's "United" before it's Great Britain united with Northern Ireland as one country.

So it's simple. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales, The UK is Great Britain AND Northern Ireland.

And who cares what the rest of Europe thinks about the British? All the other European countries are good for is to go there on holiday, eat their awful food, have our innocent football fans almost murdered by riot police in their bear pit football stadiums, what them get excited when their economic growth exceeds 1% and bailing them out during a major conflict.

"It's "United" before it's Great Britain united with Northern Ireland as one country."

The word "before" should be "because".
